Herb Properties
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)
Is one of the best herbs known for supporting an overworked nervous system. Passionflower's relaxing and sedating properties make it an excellent tranquillising herbs for chronic insomnia, having no addictive effects and allowing the user to awake refreshed and alert in the morning. It exerts its beneficial effects on the nerves by toning the sympathetic nerve centre, and improving circulation and nutrition to the nerves. It has significant antispasmodic properties and helps with insomnia.

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
Is an effective relaxant for the nervous and digestive system. Chamomile is also an excellent and gentle sedative, safe for babies, children and adults including pregnant women. It is highly useful for treating mild anxiety and insomnia and is famous for soothing all kind of digestive upsets, particularly when related to stress and tension. It helps to relax smooth muscles throughout the body.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Has been treasured for thousands of years for its delightful scent. It is a good remedy for treating mild anxiety, nervousness and physical symptoms caused by stress such as tension headaches, migraine and insomnia. It is traditionally considered to balance emotions, uplifting the spirits and relieving mild depression. Lavender also acts as a tonic to the nervous system, restoring vitality to people suffering from nervous exhaustion. It helps to calm heart palpitations and trembling.

St John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
One of Europe's most sacred herbs it is an ancient remedy for the nervous system, relaxing tension and mild anxiety, uplifting the spirits and raising energy levels. It is effective in stabilising and nourishing the nervous system and lifting mild to moderate depression.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)
Is an excellent herb for soothing the nerves, lifting the spirits and counter-acting mild depression. It is an effective herb when nervousness or depression affects the action of the heart, causing heart pain, palpitations or irregular beat. It has a relaxing effect on muscle spasms and its affinity to the digestive system and gentle toning effect on the liver and gallbladder help to soothe nausea, vomiting and poor appetite (also in pregnancy). Antique herbal books praise Lemon Balm in melancholy and bad dreams and St. Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) stated that one likes to laugh when one takes it.

Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
This unassuming perennial shrub hides its sweet treasures in its roots. The active constituents of Licorice have a remarkable affinity with the human endocrine system and is a potent tonic for the adrenal glands, as the glycyrrhizin present has a similar structure to hormones produced by them. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-arthritic effects similar (but without the side effects) to cortisone. Its most outstanding feature is its ability to improve resistance to stress making it useful in times of both physical and emotional stress (adaptogenic action).

Oats (Avena sativa)
A nutritious grain full of protein, calcium, magnesium, silica, potassium, iron and vitamins that is a energy-giving nerve tonic and a relaxant at the same time. Oats have traditionally been used to treat mild depression, debility and nervous exhaustion. It is an excellent remedy in convalescence of physical and emotional stress.
