Herb Properties
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
Is an unsurpassed relaxant for the digestive tract and nervous system. It is famous for soothing digestive upsets including indigestion, gastritis, spasms, colic, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, wind and distension. As a bonus it is also a gentle sedative that helps to relax smooth muscles throughout the body and to calm the nerves. It has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic and pain relieving properties which help also in more serious and chronic digestive problems; very soothing for mother and child.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
Is worldwide a popular herb that delights since ancient times with its delicious and refreshing taste. It is a digestive tonic that stimulates and cleanses liver and gallbladder. It was traditionally used to prevent gallstones. Taken as a tea it has cooling, disinfecting, cramp and gas relieving properties. It is highly useful in nausea, travel sickness, indigestion, over-acidity of the stomach and loss of appetite. The tannins help to protect the gut lining from irritation and infection. Traditionally served as refreshment or after-meal drink.

Fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare)
Is an aromatic and alkalising plant from the Mediterranean that is known as an ancient digestive remedy. Its volatile oils increase the appetite, enhance the secretion of digestive enzymes and assist in the proper absorption of nutrients. It helps to relax any spasms in the digestive tract and relieve wind, colic and hiccoughs. Here it is specifically useful in infants. Traditionally it was also used to treat indigestion, heartburn, constipation and abdominal pain. Fennel is an excellent herb for detoxification, encouraging elimination via the urine.

Aniseed (Pimpinella anisum)
The volatile oil in Aniseed is used to ease griping, intestinal colic and flatulence. It has a lovely taste that is used to improve the flavour of medicines, especially for children.

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)
Is one of the oldest known healing herbs. It is a powerful diuretic and bitter tonic to the digestive system, hence the use of Dandelion Coffee. It promotes the function of liver, gallbladder, pancreas and kidney. It encourages an overall healthy digestive system, which is essential in order to halt the inflammatory cascade in disease processes. Dandelion is most beneficial in chronic health complaints since this bitter tonic increases the elimination of toxins, wastes and pollutants and helps also to cleanse blood and body tissues. Dandelion is a supportive herb for problems associated with a sluggish liver, such as tiredness and irritability, skin problems and headaches. It helps to increase the flow of digestive juices, enhances the appetite and helps to break down food for better absorption.

Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
This unassuming perennial shrub hides its sweet treasures in its roots. It is a potent tonic for the adrenal glands and has an anti-inflammatory effect. It calms irritated mucous membranes of the digestive tract and helps to relieve abdominal colic, gastritis and ulcers.

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)
Is an aromatic spice with warming and strengthening properties, a true tonic for the whole body. It stimulates and warms the digestive system helping to relieve cramps, colic, wind, nausea and vomiting. The tannins have an astringent action and help to stem bleeding and resolve diarrhoea. It also has circulatory-stimulant and antiseptic properties.
