Herb Properties
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)
Passionflower is a classical herb used for cardiac insufficiency and has analgesic, anxiolyic, hypnotic, mild sedative and spasmolytic properties. Is one of the best herbs known for supporting an overworked nervous system by toning the sympathetic nerve centre, and improving circulation and nutrition to the nerves. It’s relaxing effects also calm and tone the heart. It has significant antispasmodic properties and helps with insomnia.

Hawthorne leaves and Flowers (Crataegus spp.)
Hawthorn has been traditionally used to prevent and treat heart problems, including hypertension with myocardial weakness, angina pectoris, tachycardia and circulatory disorders (atheriosclerosis, Buerger’s disease). It increases the force of myocardial contractions, increases coronary blood flow, reduces mycocardial oxygen demand and protects against mycocardial damage. Furthermore it is hypotensive, improves heart rate variability), is hypochoesterolaemic and acts as a peripheral vasodilator. It is high in antioxidant which is useful to improve positive health outcomes in heart disease.

St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
St. John’s Wort is one of Europe’s most sacred herbs and is a well known remedy both in traditional and modern medicine for the nervous system, relaxing tension and mild anxiety, uplifting the spirits and raising energy levels. It is effective in stabilising and nourishing the nervous system and lifting mild to moderate depression. Many heart problems are aggravated by nervous tension and St. John’s Wort is an ideal herb to de-stress.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)
Lemon Balm has analgesic, antioxidant, carminative, circulatory tonic, nervine and spasmolytic properties. Is an excellent herb for soothing the nerves, lifting the spirits and counter-acting mild depression. It is an effective herb when nervousness or depression affects the action of the heart, causing heart pain, palpitations or irregular beat. It has a relaxing effect on muscle spasms and its affinity to the digestive system and gentle toning effect on the liver and gallbladder help to soothe nausea, vomiting and poor appetite. Antique herbal books praise Lemon Balm in melancholy and bad dreams and St. Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) stated that the person who takes Lemon Balm will be rewarded with an ease to laugh.

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)
Anti-arrhythmic, cardio tonic, hypotensive, spasmolytic, nerve tonic. In folkloristic description it is said to ‘cuddle a heart in need’. Furthermore it is also a great nerve soothing herb described as far back as Classical Greece. Its muscle-relaxing effect is helpful in general muscle tightness. Motherwort also eases menopausal symptoms that are caused by the rapid decline of endogenous oestrogen; namely anxiety, insomnia and heart palpitations.
