Herb Properties -
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
Chamomile is extraordinarily beneficial for the expectant and new mother and this is reflected in the Latin name of its genus ‘Matricaria’, meaning mother. It has important wound healing, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmotic properties, which help to ease afterbirth pains, heal the womb and prevent infection. Chamomile is also an unsurpassed relaxant for the digestive tract and nervous system. It is a superb herb for soothing digestive upsets including indigestion, gastritis, spasms, colic, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, wind and distension. As a bonus it is also a gentle sedative that helps to relax smooth muscles throughout the body and to calm the nerves. It is very soothing for both mother and child in the sometimes demanding times after birth.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)
This aromatic plant from the Mediterranean is a highly beneficial herb during breastfeeding for both mother and child. Since ancient Greek times it was used to promote the good flow of nourishing breast milk (galactagogue action). As an additional advantage the breastfeeding mother passes the volatile oils on to the baby to soothe digestive troubles. For this purpose it can also be given to the infant directly since Fennel is a digestive remedy for all age groups. This is reflected by the fact that it is an important ingredient in the well known ‘gripe water’. The volatile oils of Fennel help to relax any spasms in the digestive tract and relieve wind, colic and hiccoughs. Fennel further increases the appetite, enhance the secretion of digestive enzymes and assist in the proper absorption of nutrients. Traditionally it was also used to treat indigestion, heartburn, constipation and abdominal pain.

Aniseed (Pimpinella anisum)
Aniseed is a frequently used traditional galactagogue that has – like fennel – the dual property of increasing the flow of breast milk and supporting digestive health. The volatile oil in Aniseed is used to ease griping, intestinal colic and flatulence. It has a lovely taste that is used to improve the flavour of medicines, especially for children. As an additional bonus it has a marked expectorant and anti-spasmotic effect, making it highly useful in bronchial complaints and coughing.

Nettle (Urtica dioica)
Nettle leaf is highly nutritious and has been used for centuries as an invigorating tonic in convalescence, anaemia and nutrients demanding circumstances like breastfeeding. It is a real treasure in terms of strengthening minerals and trace minerals including calcium, magnesium and iron, trace minerals, vitamins (A & C) and enzymes, all needed during breastfeeding. Furthermore it is an excellent galactagogue that helps to stimulate milk production and flow. Nettle leaf is also famous as a blood cleansing and blood forming herb, which supports good quality breast milk. It is an anti-inflammatory and helps to arrest excessive bleeding from the womb, which is useful after birth. Nettle leaf strengthens the kidneys and can be used in a ‘flushing regime’ to prevent urinary tract infections. It stimulates secretory glands in the stomach, liver, pancreas and gallbladder which are all needed for a healthy digestive system and proper absorption of food.

Raspberry leaves (Rubus idaeus)
The most famous Western herb used during and after pregnancy. It has a specific affinity to the uterus and has been used since ancient times to encourage an easy childbirth. Post partum it stimulates milk production and ensures a speedy recovery from birth by supporting uterine involution and lessen uterine pain. When taken regularly after birth it helps to tone and strengthen the pelvic tissues needed in the recovery of the strained pelvic floor muscles. Raspberry leaves further tone and soothe the mucus membranes of the kidneys and urinary tract and help to check diarrhoea and bleeding from the womb.
